Foster City, Do You Want a Charter High School or Performing Arts Center?
The last parcel of land left in Foster City is going to be developed with mixed use housing and
possible retail. There is still a 2 acre parcel that will either house a charter high school or possibly a performing arts center. If you live in Foster City, which would you like to see built?
Foster City is the only city outside of Hillsborough in the San Mateo Union High School District without
a high school. The 16 acres of land between Shell Blvd. and Foster City Blvd. that is to be developed is exactly where a high school was originally to be built by the San Mateo Union High School District in the 1970’s but it never happened due to declining enrollment, no funds, lack of interest, you pick. The high school kids from Foster City are given the choice of which high school they want to attend in San Mateo or Burlingame but none of the 4 high schools are near home or, in fact, in their own city. Does that mean these kids are missing something? I don’t know, only they can say, but they must be bussed to school or drive there, and it’s a long way away from home to get to any of these schools.
The only performing arts centers are in San Mateo. The largest one is at San Mateo High School and it’s used for everything from music to dance to lectures to theater. Bayside Intermediate School also
has a new performing arts center that it being used by the greater community for events. There is a lot of discussion about building a performing arts center in Foster City, on the 2 acres that are currently set aside for the charter high school. This center would house the Hillbarn Theater and be available for local arts groups such as Peninsula Musical Arts, the parent group of the Foster City Community Chorus and Heart & Soul, which we sing in. It certainly would be great to have a real theater to perform in that is in Foster City and that other groups could also use.
If you live in Foster City which do you think should be built? The group trying to start the charter high school has until June to raise the seed money for the high school. If they are unable to do it then all hope for a local high school in Foster City will die. You need to raise your voice and let the City Council know what you want and why.
