Dining on Burlingame Avenue, Burlingame CA
I had lunch this past week with my friend, Suzi. As usual, when we meet for lunch and want to eat at one of the many restaurants along Burlingame Avenue, we have the same conversation. “Where would you like to eat?” “I don’t know.” “Well, what kind of food do you want?” “I don’t know. We had Chinese last night so I don’t want that.” “Okay, I’m tired of Mexican food, so let’s go to…..” This banter goes on for a short while before we finally settle in on one place and wander off to go there.
This week we finally decided to go to Copenhagen Bakery and Cafe. This local treasure is a European cafe sitting in downtown Burlingame. They have great food, bakery items to die for, and there’s always a line out the door at lunchtime. We got into the line and looked at the delectable deserts sitting in the refrigerator cabinet while commenting that we were NOT going to touch them. We looked at the menu and chatted about what to have. They offer great sandwiches, fresh salads, wonderful soup, and Danish open faced sandwiches. We both decided to order the same salad, their beautiful green salad with shrimp.
This is one of the better salads around Burlingame. A great variety of vegies circle the greens and then a huge amount of shrimp sitting at the center. It’s a good value, too. If you haven’t gone to Cogenhagen, you order in the front of the restaurant area, take the number they give you to place on your table, and they serve your meal. Copenhagen is one of the good, solid restaurants downtown. Prices are moderate and the food is always fresh with a Danish flair.
If you just can’t stand looking at the deserts in the refrigerator cabinet, you can have that with coffee and make that coffee break truly special. I do recommend this if you aren’t counting calories, like I am forever doing. The Copenhagen Bakery and Cafe has been in downtown Burlingame for over 25 years giving us a little bit of Europe on our street. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. And, if you absolutely can’t stop yourself, try a slice of their Princess Cake. It’s one of the house specialties.
